I was looking to transfer my small business tax needs to a new CPA/firm and contacted Akopyan & Company to learn more about their services. Scott returned my email inquiry promptly, which I was thrilled about as I reached out to them during a busy time in tax season.
I was very clear about my business needs (QB for bookkeeping, Gusto for payroll) and was looking for accounting services working with these interfaces. I was simply requesting ball park estimates for yearly tax services.
After evading all of my questions about their payment structure, I decided to book a ‘meet & greet’ requiring a $200 deposit, in order to move forward with establishing services. Come to find out, their business structure was the farthest thing from what I was seeking (requiring clients to ditch QB and use their overpriced payroll services), and their rates were far beyond what I said my price range was in my initial email.
They had no problem taking my $200, however the transaction was awkward for obvious reasons. Could have just told me in an email that you weren’t the right fit. When a CPA is uncomfortable talking about money and his own fee structure…..red flag.
